Australia is taking a bold stand to protect its youngest citizens from the darker side of social media, and it’s sparking a heated debate. Wells emphasized, ‘There’s a time and place for social media in Australia, but there’s no place for predatory algorithms, harmful content, and toxic popularity meters manipulating Australian children.’ She added, ‘Online platforms can target children with chilling precision. We’re demanding they use that same technology to protect them.’
And this is the part most people miss: Inman Grant had initially reached out to 16 companies, including Discord, GitHub, Roblox, and Twitch, to assess their compliance. While some, like Discord, were notably absent from the final list, others like Kick were added following high-profile incidents—such as the tragic death of a French user streaming on the platform in August. Kick has pledged to cooperate with authorities and review its content, stating, ‘Our priority is to protect creators and ensure a safer environment on Kick.’
As the ban looms, platforms are responding in different ways. TikTok, Snapchat, and Meta have reluctantly agreed to comply, despite their disagreements. YouTube, however, remains defiant, challenging its inclusion and hinting at legal action. Elon Musk’s X platform has also voiced opposition, amid ongoing disputes with the eSafety commissioner. Meanwhile, Roblox, though not on the list, has committed to introducing new age assurance features in Australia by year-end, preventing under-16s from chatting with adults.
